Week 2 Story: Jackson and his Coach

I have written a story in my own word based on a story from the week 2 Anthology readings.

Week 2 Story: Jackson and His Coach

There once was a kid that had just joined a college golf team. His name was Jackson and he was very excited to be on the team and be apart of a group. He was a very good golfer but was very bad about time management and late to a lot of things. One morning for workouts he over slept his alarm and missed his 7 o'clock workouts. Whenever the coach asked him about how the workouts went he was faced with a predicament about whether he should lie about missing or just tell him it went great. He decided to tell his coach that the workouts went good rather than just tell him the truth. He didn't want to disappoint his coach in his first week of being on the team so he decided one lie about missing would be better than telling his coach he already missed the first workout. As time went on in his first semester he continually missed different classes, appointments, and workouts and the lies continued to add up. Each time he missed something he would lie to cover his tracks and the pile of lies added up continuously. Finally the coach started to catch on to Jackson's lies and set him up for a trap. He scheduled a workout early in the morning for the team and decided to come to this workout. Jackson of course didn't come in the morning as he decided to sleep in, that after noon coach confronted Jackson.

"Jackson how was the workouts this morning??" said Coach

"they were great coach one of our best all year!!" exclaimed Jackson

"if they were so great then why weren't you there?" questioned Coach

Jackson knew he was caught and broke down in front of his coach.

"I'm sorry coach I shouldn't of lied but I just didn't want to disappoint you" said Jackson

"You lying to me is the biggest disappointment of all" said coach

Jackson ended up getting kicked off the team because the coach could not trust him and whether or not he was telling the truth. Jackson being deceitful ended up being the death of him.

This story is similar the the crane and the crab because just like the crane who lied to the fish. Jackson lied to his coach and ended up getting the death sentence in the end whenever he ended up getting caught. This shows how it is always better to just tell the truth rather than going behind peoples back and lying.

Reading Notes: Jatakas Athology

I completed the readings and published a blog post with my notes.

1. Crane and the Crab
The crab was smarter than the crane but the crane got what was coming for him.

2. Crocodile and Monkey
The monkey is a lot like the crab because he is cunning and was able to use another animals stupidity to save their own lives.

The little short synopsis show how the two stories I picked were similar in storyline. The crane and the crab is a story that shows how it is not good to do bad and deceive others. The crane tricks all the fish in the dry pond that he will help them but instead kills and eats all the fish. However, the crane trips up by allowing the crab to ride on the cranes neck and it backfires because the crab gets the last laugh by making his way to the lush and beautiful pond. The crocodile tries to do the same to the monkey by saying he will carry him across the water only to turn back on him and take him under water to kill him. However, the monkey thinks outside the box and says that his heart is up in a tree and the monkey's heart is why the crocodile wanted to kill him. The crocodile allows him to get back on land and now knows that he has been tricked back as the monkey tells him he is a fool for allowing him to live. Both of these stories are about people trying to deceive others but it ends up backfiring in the end and I would like to do my story about this later in the week. I think this will be a topic that everyone can relate to and see how it is bad to trick others for your own personal gain because it can backfire on you in the end.

Reading Options

I spent around 30 minutes browsing the reading options, and I published a blog with my notes.

Comic Books

Images

Audio Books

The three ways in which learning will best suit me will be being able to listen and follow along with the story. I am not a very strong reader but comprehend really well so I like to listen to audio books because it is easier for me to retain the information. I also like being able to see images with my readings so the comic books and images will make it easier to have a mental image along with just the story. I am excited that I have these extra resources to further comprehend the story at hand and make it easier to understand a world unlike my own in these stories.

Time Stratagies

For this class I feel like I will need to get into a groove to be able to finish all the assignments by the due date. I like that we make our own schedule and can go at our pace each week but I know I'll still need to have good time management skills to be successful in this class. The first article I read was Realistic Study Plans and their were a few main points I really liked. The first tip I loved was to set a study goal rather than just going in blind into a study session. I often find myself start studying with no ending in sight and it really ends up going no where some days but setting a goal to reach will keep me focused. I like having a goal in sight that I can work toward. The second tip I liked was to cut down on hour long sessions and break it into daily 30 minute sessions that you get in a daily routine to achieve success. In the next article I read, 3 steps to recapture time, the best part of that article for me was when it talked about the art of saying no. I often find myself doing other things because people ask me to whenever I need to be studying. I need to push myself to say no to people and put in the time and effort to study. I hope to incorporate these things into my studying routine and hopefully they will be beneficial to me.

Technology blog post

I have never started my own blog or done anything similar to it. I am actually excited about the opportunity to learn more about the technology side of this class. I have never been very big on technology so forcing my hand into using it will be good for my future. I want to continue to work on web design and making my blogs look good and appealing to the eye. This class is really like none I have ever taken before because of the way each person has their own blog. I just want to continue to get comfortable with technology and have these different websites and blogs become easy to me. Navigating the course has been tough for me as well but the more days I have used this style of class the easier it has become.

Epics of India Assignments

Looking over the assignments I am excited to have my own schedule that I can go through the week at my pace. I like how you set your own requirements and can schedule the times that best suit your schedule. I am also glad to see that their is an opportunity for extra credit. I hope that I don't need the extra credit as I will gain my A my own way but if I need the extra credit then I have that opportunity.  I like that we will be able to read others blog post in the class and be able to give our feedback to their writings.  I am also excited that others will be able to comment on my own post so that I will be able to fix the problems and get better as a writer. I am ready for this semester in this class and believe I will enjoy how the class is run.

Introduction to a Golfer

Hello, My name is Blaine Hale and I am a junior here at the University of Oklahoma. I am from Dallas, TX and have lived there my whole life. I am a business major here but am also on the OU golf team. I've been playing golf my whole life and it has always been a dream to play in college. A couple of my biggest accomplishments last year included a season award of being a national All-American in golf but also winning the national championship in Chicago at the end of the year. I will add a picture of the championship below. It was a dream come true and the reason I came to Oklahoma in the first place. I basically revolve my life around my school and my friends as all my teammates are my brothers to me. I hope to one day play golf on the PGA tour but if that doesn't work out I would love to move back to Dallas. A few of my goals to finish out my college career will include another year of being an All-American but also to be an academic All-American. I am mostly a people person and love to just be around others at all times. I don't have any pets but my roommate has a dog that I have basically adopted for myself. I can't make much food other than popcorn and a PB&J but I normally eat out anyway. I don't really have any hobbies other than playing golf. If I could have one day to do whatever I wanted I would fly out to Georgia to play Augusta National with some friends of mine as that has always been a dream of mine. I didn't do a lot this summer other than travel to a couple places for tournaments but I will get to go to a lot of cool places this semester on our traveling schedule for the golf team. We will get to fly around the country and go to a lot of cool places. I am excited for the year and for this class.

Growth Mindset Blog

My sophomore year in high school a couple of teachers were really big on growth mindset and incorporating growth mindset questions in their test. My pre-calculus class always had at least one question in each test or quiz that was considered to be much harder and challenging then all the rest. They would either be questions based on future chapters or just a little more advanced than the practice questions in the reviews. I was always a big fan of the more challenging questions because I loved the challenge of finding the right answer. The best way for me to concur the growth mindset questions was to practice and challenge my friends in the class with me. I have always felt that if others are helping and pushing you to do better than you will grow more than if you were just by yourself. I play golf and I always feel more accomplished with a round whenever I play with others and shoot the lowest in the group than if I were to just play by myself. I love the challenge of others because they push me to get better. I also believe that learning from others and finding ways that they do things can help broaden your knowledge of certain things. I know for myself that I want to continue to have a growth mindset whenever I am doing anything whether that be in my golf or in my school work. While I feel like I have learned a lot about growth mindset I am excited to find new ways to push myself to be better at everything I do.

Story Book Favorites Blog

When browsing through the different story books the first one that I came across was a story about the good, the bad, and the ugly. It was a story written about three different girls and just a witty and fun reading while still having a realistic story to it. The design of the page was very simple and easy to follow along with the diary post each girl was writing. Each of the girls were writing about their lives but were all connected in some way. They had a good use of images in the blog and enjoyed how it had a proper theme of "girly" to it because it consisted of three different girls diaries.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

The second story I looked at was Brothers: with me or against me. This story talked about Lakshmana and Rama and their journey together through life. The real reason I chose this certain story was because I really liked the name and it really drew me in. However, I was not a fan of the design to the page because it was tough to follow along and was just confusing to look at. His page was tough to know where to start and stop because it contained a lot of conversation making it unknown who was speaking when. It also had a confusing style to his writing making his story book a somewhat bust for me.

Brothers: with me or against me

Finally the last of the storybooks I read was How I met Your Mother. For obvious reasons I chose this storybook because of its name. I really liked this story because it took older stories but was able to bring it a younger feel to the writing. The page was easy to navigate and I liked the way it presented the story to the the readers. This was my favorite of the stories I read because of the humor it incorporated to the standard storyline.

Favorite Place

One of my favorite places in the world is the Dallas Athletic Club in Mesquite, Texas. This is the place I play golf whenever I am in my hometown of Dallas. I spend more time out at this golf club than I do at my own house whenever I am home for the summers. I grew up playing golf here in high school and a lot of my success is contributed to this club. I have countless amount of friends that I have gained from being a member at D.A.C. and still keep in touch with them. Golf is a sport that you can play everyday of your life and never get board of the ending result. It is a game of constant struggle against yourself and I believe it is the pursuit to be perfect even though no one has ever achieved it that brings people back each and every day. Also the fact that you can meet someone on the first tee but be great friends with them by the end of the round because of the time and common interest most people have that all play the great sport.
